I'm a historian, journalist and critic. I hold a PhD in Politics from the University of Wales and have worked as a lecturer at Swansea University, Swansea Metropolitan University and the University of Glamorgan.

I'm the author of a number of books, including Orwell and Marxism (2009), British Communism and Literary Theory (2011) and Cultural Studies (1999).

I think of myself as a libertarian Marxist. This means that I regard socialism as an essential precondition of individual liberty – or, to put it another way, it means that the writings of John Stuart Mill are nearly as important to me as those of Marx, Trotsky and Gramsci. I'm active in the anti-cuts campaign in Swansea.
